I bought a Tilt Hydrometer because the idea of watching fermentation gravity from my phone sounded like the future. No more sanitizing a wine thief, no more sticky hydrometer cylinders, no more guessing when a batch had stalled. Just drop the device into the must, open the app, and watch the numbers roll in. In practice, that fantasy is about seventy percent real.

What the Tilt Does Well

The Tilt really is clever. It is a sealed, floating hydrometer and thermometer that broadcasts gravity and temperature over Bluetooth. Sanitize it, drop it in, and it starts logging. For someone who makes mead and wine in small batches, the convenience is meaningful. I can check a fermentation curve from the kitchen table, the office, or even while running errands if I have cloud logging enabled.

Setup is genuinely simple. The device arrives pre-calibrated, and the app finds it quickly. There are no probes to insert, no grommets to wrestle into a lid, and no risk of introducing oxygen every time I want a reading. That alone makes it attractive for long secondary ferments where you want to peek without disturbing anything.

Tilt also offers the units in multiple colors, which is genuinely useful if you run more than one fermenter at a time. Each color shows up as its own device in the app, so I can tell at a glance which bucket is which. For a small-scale home brewer juggling a couple of projects, that little detail matters.

The Caveats I Did Not Expect

For all the polish in the marketing, the day-to-day experience has rough edges. The first one showed up before I even brewed with it: the battery drains on the shelf. I store my Tilt upright, sideways, and every other orientation people suggest online, and it still shows up weaker than I expect the next time I need it. It is not a dealbreaker because the battery is replaceable, but it is annoying for a device whose whole pitch is readiness.

The second issue is specific to beer, and it is the one that makes me hesitate before dropping the Tilt into a hoppy or high-protein batch. Krausen can build up enough that the Tilt no longer tilts freely. When that happens, the reading lags or flatlines, and you are left trying to decide whether fermentation is done or the device is just stuck against the side of the bucket. In wines and meads with less aggressive foam it has been more reliable, but I have learned not to trust it blindly in the final days of any batch.

One Idea for a Better Design

I have wondered whether a simple mechanical rig could solve the krausen problem. If a design like this kept the sensor below the surface while still allowing it to tilt, it could remove one of the biggest accuracy problems the Tilt has today. Whether Tilt or a third-party accessory maker ever produces something similar is another question entirely.

Then there is the software experience. The data exports to Google Sheets, which works, but it does not feel like a modern product dashboard. Graphs are janky, layout is manual, and there is no beautiful Tilt-owned portal that ties everything together. For a premium brewing accessory, the reporting side feels like an afterthought. I would love a clean web portal with shareable batch timelines, but that does not exist today.

Finally, I simply use it less than I thought I would. For meads and wines, gravity often follows a predictable arc, and once I have a rhythm I do not feel compelled to log every point digitally. I still use the Tilt for experiments or finicky batches, but it is not the default tool I imagined it would be.

Is It Worth Buying?

Honestly, I do not think it is. The Tilt Hydrometer has its strengths, but once you stack the $135 price against the inaccurate readings, the janky graphs, and the general sense that the software has been neglected, it starts to feel like an overpriced gimmick rather than an essential brewing tool.

I worry it is heading the same direction as the PLAATO Airlock, which I also bought. PLAATO looked promising, then the company announced it was shifting focus to commercial breweries and away from consumers. The app stopped getting updates, the cloud service effectively vanished, and the device I paid good money for became a paperweight overnight. It remains one of the worst purchases I have ever made. I look at the Tilt and ask the same question: is the product going to keep improving, or is the consumer side going to be abandoned once the next pivot happens?

Right now the hardware has potential, but the software and ecosystem do not inspire confidence. A small weighted chassis that holds the Tilt below the surface while still letting it tilt freely would solve the krausen-sticking problem almost entirely. If Tilt commits to that kind of hardware refinement and a real reporting platform, this could become a solid investment. Until then, I would not recommend buying one for most homebrewers.

Rating: 3 out of 5 — a neat idea with real utility, but at this price it needs accuracy and software that keep up with the marketing.
