Review: Fuser.Com

FuserAfter writing my review of Orgoo yesterday I was emailed by a woman named Emily. She said that she was from Fuser.com and wanted me to write a review of their service because they offered many of the features that Orgoo was lacking. Things such as the in-box columns that were re-sizable, etc..

While they do not yet offer the instant messaging which is a huge drawback for me. They do offer integration into MySpace and Facebook. The integration seems pretty good. Although it is not something that I would use on a daily basis. It allows you to quickly see who has messaged you, your top friends based on comment / message activity etc. Again this is not something that I would use on a daily basis so I will not go into too much detail about it here.

Review: Orgoo.com

OrgooA few months back I signed up for the Orgoo beta and had to wait until they opened it up for more accounts. Last week I received a notice that my account was ready to be used. I quickly went over to the site and signed up for my account. I have been testing this over the last few days and while it is a good service I do not think it is ready for most people to use as their primary e-mail / IM.

It is extremely easy to setup your IM or e-mail accounts for use on Orgoo, the interface is nice and easy to navigate. The entire design of the site is easy on your eyes so you will have no problems staying on the site for a while. There are no obtrusive flashing banner ad’s or anything like that.

Blog Spam

This is nothing new for me. My blog is constantly hit with spammers trying to leave comments. THey have not succeeded because I am using the Akismet plug-in for wordpress. However I am starting to wonder if there is a better way to block these guys. I notice every time that they are coming from different IP addresses, so I cannot simply create a blocklist otherwise it would become huge.

I continue to have to monitor my spam queue and find things like this

birkoff_[!2] | birkoff_md@goatrance.com | index5.onirte.com | IP: 201.70.17.163
birkoff_[!2] | birkoff_yc@goatrance.com | index5.onirte.com | IP: 192.41.218.100

Akismet does a really good job so far it has stopped 13,813 spam comments from reaching my site but what I am wondering is if there is a better way to filter these guys out and not allow them to access the site using up bandwidth. If any of you readers know of a good method please share it with me in the comments below.

Psystar Mac Clones

There has been a lot of controversy as to whether or not the Psystar OpenPro Mac clone is real or not. Will it actually make it to the market or will Apple squash the idea. One person actually provided a video of their machine booting into Leopard. Now this is a cheap alternative to buying a Mac system but it is very far from a suggestion on my part. After watching this video and reading what I have about these machines I would never suggest that anyone buy one of these machines.

The sounds that come from this machine are hilarious. The fans make the system sound like a vacuum cleaner. Now there are some benefits to getting a machine like this. It is cheaper than buying a mac system, however you will not get any support from Apple. Now let’s weigh out the cons.

Review: Liarcard.com

Liarcard LogoA while back I heard about a site called liarcard.com, this site stated that they had voice analysis software that was initially developed for security purposes. It is now available to the public and they state that they are over 95% accurate. I decided to try out this service tonight with my girlfriend. We were asking all sorts of questions and answering them differently each time. I have to say that this has to be a total waste of money. When I was asking questions I asked what her favorite color was. She answered with pink and it said she was honest. Later in the conversation I asked the question again and she said orange… Guess what? She was truthful again. At once point during the conversation I asked what time it was, she stated the correct time and it buzzed saying that she was lying.

Re: The Move

Ok so things have not gone as smooth as I would have liked.  When we first looked at the apartment in Peabody, MA it was in need of some desperate work before anyone could live there.  The landlord said that he was going to get things into shape and that things would be ready by March 1st.  This was giving him almost 90 days to get the apartment ready.

We moved down here around the 3rd of March based on the landlord saying that the apartment was ready.  When we arrived with all of our stuff in the Uhaul we found the apartment was still far from being ready.  We had to put all of our stuff in storage and are now staying with my girlfriend’s father at his house.  While things are going good I don’t want to be an inconvenience.

Claire and I have found another apartment and it will be ready by April 1st (fingers crossed) and hopefully we can get settled into our own place.  I cannot wait to get the apartment all set-up.

On a good note we went today and got our gym memberships at Bally Total Fitness today.  I am looking forward to working out and getting into shape while also increasing my muscle tone.

Kernel Panics

Over the last few days I have had several kernel panics on OS X 10.5.2.  The only thing that has changed since this all started happening was a new job.  I have been working from home using the Cisco client for the first few days and all was going well.  I found it tedious to continuously enter my password into the Cisco client and it was recommended that I use a utility called Shimo which is a more feature rich front end for the Cisco backend.

All of these kernel panics started happening shortly after I started to use Shimo, I am wondering if it could be the cause?  Have any of you readers had this issue?  It seems to only happen sometimes and not every time I connect or disconnect.  It even happens after I have been connected for a while.  I think I will have to discontinue use of Shimo and go back to the Cisco client.  If this solves the kernel panics I will be sure to let you know.

Broken Arm

Broken ArmFriday night I went to see my boys and we went to McDonalds in Rutland.  I was too big to take Paxton into the play place tunnels so my girl Claire took him in.  They were in a glass bubble so I pulled myself up onto one of the bars so that he could see me and I could make him laugh.  I was there for a few minutes and then decided to hop down, when I did my arm caught on one of the bars that went to a T and I heard "crack".  My fingers started to tingle so I said we have to go to Claire.  She thought we were getting kicked out for her being in the tunnels.  When I told her that I broke my arm she thought I was joking.  The guy that was sitting about 30 feet away confirmed to her that he heard it break.  I went to the ER and they confirmed that it was broken.  I broke the big bone in my forearm on the inside near my thumb.  I have it in a splint, I wouldn’t let them cast it because the cast would not allow me to type because it goes over your knuckles.  If I cannot type I cannot work and well I need to work.

The doctor that saw me looked at my x-ray and said that I needed to go see an orthopedic surgeon to have surgery.  He said they were going to wrap the bone with a metal plate.  I am not going to do that.  I already have one metal plate on my collar bone from a car accident and in the winter I really feel the cold weather.  I looked at the x-ray and it looks like a small fracture, I think they just want to bump up the bills hehe.

Everything has a free trial these days

Over the past few days I have been digging through the job sites posting my resume to just about everything that is available.  This morning I came across this posting on craigslist that caught my eye.  In the post the person is looking for a PHP Developer position and links to their online resume.  Their resume is located at http://www.php-mysql-developer.com/.  It is not odd that someone would put their resume online.  I have mine right here.  The part that really makes me laugh is highlighted in yellow on their resume and also shown below.

Even if you’ve never worked with a telecommuter before, I am so confident that you will not only like working with me but also start depending on me for all your programming needs. So if you have a requirement for a long term programmer, I would like to give you 2 weeks risk free trial! After 2 weeks, if you don’t like my speed, knowledge, efficiency, communication or anything else, just don’t pay for anything. I’m confident, after the trial period, I’ll be your programmer forever -:)

It seems that these days everything comes with a free trial.  By looking at the persons name it seems as if they are from overseas.  This is just too funny.  If you dont like me after 2 weeks don’t pay for anything lol.  What is the world coming to?

DRM Controlled Hard Drives

Tonight I personally lost some faith in the hard drive giant Western Digital.  I was reading an article that was talking about the new MyBook 1TB external drive.  Currently there are work-arounds for this but when you install the drive and the software that it comes with it does not allow you to share media files like MP3, WMV across your network.  These are not the only 2 extensions that are disallowed, there are actually more than 30 that are restricted.

I am not sure why Western Digital thinks it is their place to police the files and what is shared on a network.  In the future I can see this software being installed on the drive hidden from view where it will take a nice little utility that someone hacks together to remove the DRM protection.  I would be very surprised to see a drive that had DRM protection that was not removable by flashing a ROM chip or clearing a partition but it looks like that is the way of the future.

I guess I will have to stop buying Western Digital and move over to Seagate drives.  You can read more on this Wired post.
