If you have altered the directory structure, or permissions, of /private/var/tmp/ that might be a cause. If you reinstall and see the same problem, check the contents of the Console application. The daemon, which launchctl confirms is running on your Mac, talks to the user interface via a special file. Does the following file exist on your Mac?
